The Educators in VR Creative Writing Meetup began with NaNoWriMo 2018, the National Novel Writing Month held annually in November with the goal of writing 50,000 words in 30 days.

For over 20 years, NaNoWriMo inspired writers to put writing first in their lives, setting aside time to write every day, overcoming obstacles, focused on attaining a word count goal to finally get their idea and dream of writing a book, or whatever their writing goals, in this self-discipline challenge. Many famous writers found their voice and created their novels during this November push.

Due to some unfortunate circumstances, the NaNoWriMo nonprofit folded last fall.

The Creative Writing Meetup members decided to keep the spirit alive to write in virtual reality, and they’ve developed VRWriMo, the Virtual Reality Writing Month in November.

The goal is the same. Write 50,000 words in 30 days.

And we do it in VR.

Come Write in November!

VRWriMo begins November 1. We are hosting daily events in VRChat and ENGAGE XR at various times to accommodate our global members. Daylight Savings Time is often the first week or two of November, so please verify times against PT and ET to ensure you don’t miss a session.

We strongly recommend you attend in 2D on laptop, desktop, or mobile device so you are hands-and-eye-free to write.

You may attend any of our upcoming Creative Writing Meetups on Tuesdays at 3 PM PT / 6 PM ET / 11 PM UK / 7 AM* Hong Kong / 10 AM* Sydney in ENGAGE XR. We explore a wide range of writing tips, techniques, and skill building in our weekly workshops.

October 7, 2026, come learn how to improve your writing to creative writing prompts, a popular method to increase your word count and exercise your writing brain, with The Art of the Prompt in ENGAGE XR.

October 14, 2026, join us for VRWriMo Explained in ENGAGE XR with tips, tricks, and techniques for participating in this writing challenge.

Here some things you need to know about VRWriMo:

• You do not have to write a book. It’s about counting the words you write, not what you write.
• Research and prep now through October. Write in November. Edit in December.
• Timed writing prompts will be available at each meetup. You are not required to use them. They are there as inspiration, motivation, and fun.
• We write in silence. Attendees are muted during the writing time, usually 2 to 12 minutes, to allow for concentrated writing. We unmute between prompts.
• You will not be sharing what you write. We will do check-ins on how the writing is going and your headspace, but sharing is for another time, after editing.
• This is a writing self-discipline challenge. We’ll play writing games and work with writing prompts with the goal is for you to get 50K words written by November 30. We can do it!
• You do not have to attend every VRWriMo Meetup. We meet daily for about 30 minutes to write together and check-in. These events are to encourage and support you in your writing challenge.
• This is fun. Writers gathering together with a common goal is exciting, and has motivated writers for decades.

• ENGAGE XR Events:
  • Register for a free (or paid) account on ENGAGE XR.
  • Download ENGAGE XR to your computer, mobile device, or VR headset to join the events at the appropriate time.
  • Check the public ENGAGE XR calendar on the website or platform. Mark each event as ATTEND to receive an email reminder.
• VRChat Events::
  • Register for VRChat and install it through STEAM or your VR headset store. VRChat is available in 2D and mobile (beta).
  • Join the EDVR VRChat Group.
  • Watch for announcements of the VRWriMo Events and register for them.
